Migrant workers end another season in Northumberland during COVID

Every year anywhere from 100 to 300 migrant workers come to Northumberland to work on about 23 local farms. They arrive from Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. They supply a labour force to do many hard physical jobs, like picking fruits and vegetables. And for those who follow their work, these people are essential to our local economy. Cobourg honours National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, plus launches new inclusion strategy

This past week, Canadians were asked to reflect on the plight of Indigenous people who suffered in the residential school system. Local municipalities and the county government found ways to engage residents, staff, and politicians in educating themselves and others. Cobourg decided to paint a crosswalk orange with seven white feathers, representing seven sacred truths. But this effort and others are part of a larger change the municipality wants to make. Cornerstone expands services to provide new counselling programs for women and children

Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre is about to expand its services once again as it rises to the challenge of meeting the needs of women and children who face abuse. It received $200,000 from the Ontario government to provide two programs. The first program provides more counselling to women who face abuse. The second is an enhanced children’s program for kids who witness abuse. This means women and children who have experienced trauma will get the psychotherapeutic counselling they need from Cornerstone. It also means women can come to one place to receive a range of services to fit their needs and the needs of their children from temporary shelter to counselling to therapy. Continue Reading →

When you read the 2015 final report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, it speaks directly to the various levels of government urging them to act. Mainly, it focuses on things related to the federal and provincial levels of government. The mention of municipal levels of government is not as much. And, yet, it does talk about educating municipal public servants, releasing archival documents related to Indigenous people, engaging Indigenous people in policies that would impact them, and honour the contributions of local Indigenous people to the community. Statistics Canada reported recently that one in five Canadians has screened positive for symptoms of depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Visits to the emergency room at Northumberland Hills Hospital due to a mental health crisis have jumped 80 percent in the past four months. Last year, more than 36,000 people received treatment in one form or another from the Community Mental Health Service during the pandemic. The numbers are staggering.
