After a lengthy debate at a recent meeting, Brighton council sent staff back to rework a report on restructuring the advisory committees.
Politicians decided to leave some committees alone due to workload concerns. However, it was suggested the committees be more proactive and less advisory. There was also a recommendation for better training for committee members, allowing politicians to chair committees, and more formalized work plans.
Council was also asked to consider improving staff support and engagement.
In March, politicians asked staff to provide direction on consolidating the Applefest Steering Committee with the Community Events Setting Committee. Applefest is a major tourism event held each fall to celebrate the apple harvest. Staff was also to review the Rural Advisory Committee, the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Advisory Committee, and the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee.
Staff were asked to report back by August.
