Alderville First Nations Chief Taynar Simpson shares details about the recent purchase of Grape Island. The historically significant island’s role in its community’s history and in the transition from its traditional lifestyle to a more settled existence under Methodist missionaries. Simpson explains how the island, once home to approximately 200 people, represented a shift from their nomadic ways to a more structured agricultural and Christian lifestyle, with Reverend William Case playing a key role in this transformation.
In this episode, Simpson also talks about another historic moment. Recently, Alderville joined other First Nations in submitting an Indigenous-led Impact Assessment for the proposed nuclear generating station in Wesleyville. It is a groundbreaking opportunity as this has never happened before, Simpson said.
