The death of George Floyd ignited an explosion of anti-racism protests around the world, as well as Northumberland County. He was the American man who died at the hands of the Minneapolis Police last spring.
Demonstrations were held in Cobourg and Port Hope. There was a flurry of statements by local politicians and community leaders condemning racist behaviour.
In September, Cobourg council decided to take it a step further. It launched an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion project that will confront discrimination in the community. Currently, it is looking for public input on a proposed advisory committee, as well as direction on what needs to be done.
Here is my interview with Councillor Emily Chorley, Emily Chorley, who is behind a new advisory committee of council to deal with issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
