Before Canada Day, the Northumberland Coalition for Social Justice sent out a press release calling on residents to alter their plans. Instead of fireworks and celebrations, it suggested people spend time educating themselves about the history of Indigenous people. This was in the shadow of the recent discovery of more than 1,000 unmarked graves on the grounds of residential schools at locations across Canada.
In this interview, Kim McArthur-Jackson and Derek Blackadder, the two co-chairs of the coalition, will talk about how the efforts went on Canada Day. You will also learn about the organization and how it was formed in 2018 to address systemic injustice and inequity in the county. Listen carefully to hear how the group takes a different approach to its activism in achieving similar goals to those of a group of activists in Port Hope on Canada Day.
