Zoning changes could be coming to rural Port Hope property owners.
Andrew McMartin is seeking to turn an existing outbuilding into an additional housing unit on his property. On August 19, he approached the Port Hope council for consideration of a zoning amendment that would allow the renovation.
Currently, his building is zoned for agricultural use. While researching, he discovered residents who share a rural road or driveway face further zoning restrictions.
Council appeared sympathetic to McMartin’s struggle. Politicians directed town staff to examine the issue and provide a report to council for consideration. If approved, the amendment could increase housing in the area, while providing additional income to property owners, McMartin said.
