Longtime Port Hope councillor and high-profile champion of the town, Jeff Lees, died suddenly on Jan. 4. He was 61.
Lees was on Port Hope council for 25 years, during which he held the roles of councillor and deputy mayor. He ran for mayor in 2022, but lost by 177 votes.
He was given the Outstanding Citizen of the Year award in 2023 for his public service as both a politician and for the many roles he played in the community.
Lees advocated for the water plant, the expansion of the Jack Burger complex, and the development of the town park building.
Many people recognize the causes he supported as an active member. He was a Big Brother, a member of the Port Hope Kinsmen Club, Port Hope Lions Club, and a member of the Port Hope Legion. Lees loved sports, served as a hockey coach, and played baseball.
He was also a longtime member of the Port Hope Fair Board and advocated for the fall fair building while on council.
His obituary says he was known for his sarcasm, kind heart, and willingness to help others. He was a passionate Boston Bruins fan, loved AC/DC, and was a proud supporter of the town.
He leaves behind his wife, Laurie, his son, Garnet, and his daughter-in-law, Maddie.
Visitation will be held on Jan. 17 at Rushnell Funeral Home in Port Hope with a memorial service to follow.
