A proposal to develop a former high school playing field on Durham Street was delayed at a recent Cobourg council meeting.
The decision came after numerous residents appeared before politicians opposing the development.
The town purchased the property in 2022 from the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District School Board. There was a proposal to rezone the property for higher-density residential development and possible affordable housing. However, an Asset Management Plan brought before council recommends the potential sale of the lands.
Significant opposition occurred during the meeting, as speaker after speaker, along with several written submissions, argued against the proposed development. The concerns ranged from keeping the site’s biodiversity to the need for adequate infrastructure, road clearance issues, and wastewater management challenges due to the site’s low-lying nature.
Opponents held a rally in April to protest any development, as well.
