
Downtown banks in Cobourg raised safety concerns due to drug use and homelessness, according to a survey done by the mayor, which was brought up at a recent regular council meeting.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland conducted an informal survey of 11 financial institutions, which unanimously reported that vestibules providing access to banking machines were closed due to public safety concerns about individuals using them.
During the debate, Cleveland argued the need for 24/7 ATM access to prevent customers from shifting to Port Hope due to inconvenient hours.
Councillor Adam Bureau declared a conflict of interest and did not participate in the discussion.
