Northumberland County politicians reviewed their pay and benefits as part of a regular review process at the October 15 council meeting.
Using a series of comparable municipalities as a benchmark, a report recommended the warden would get a four per cent increase with an additional $2,340 annually. The deputy warden’s salary is about 11 percent higher than most other municipalities. The councillors’ salaries align with those of many different municipalities.
It was recommended the warden and deputy warden salaries be adjusted.
Further recommendations include giving councillors the option to enroll in the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) pension plan or something similar.
Politicians also considered raising the per diem rates for attending committee meetings and ad hoc meetings to $123.30 for half-day meetings and $ 246.60 for full-day meetings. This is up from the current $100 flat rate per meeting. Mileage rates will also be adjusted to participate in meetings.
Staff were asked to go back and make the proposed changes and bring them back to the Corporate Support Committee for further review.
None of the proposed changes would take effect until after the next election, scheduled for next fall.
Have a listen and see what you think about the proposed changes.
