The smell of sage filled the air as smudging began, accompanied by a sea of orange, as young and old gathered to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on the Alderville First Nation.
What was Orange Shirt Day? Indigenous and non-Indigenous people commemorate Sept. 30 as a day of reflection towards the Residential School system and embark on a shared journey of reconciliation.
During the walk, Chief Taynar Simpson would conduct interpretive stops, sharing local knowledge of the First Nations forced participation in either the Industrial or Day School program. He said the walk is reconciliation in action, but cautions more needs to be done.
