The Canadian government has until April 30 to pass legislation to remove discriminatory sections of the Indian Act and allow more people to regain their status.
Alderville Chief Taynar Simpson talks about Bill S-2. It is legislation the Senate approved to address historical issues of enfranchisement. About 80 community members gathered recently to learn more about the bill and its impact on First Nations. It is estimated up to 450,000 people could regain their status if all eligible people apply.
In the past, First Nations people could lose their status depending on their parentage. If lost, they would lose access to programs and services. Plus, they were not allowed to own land, vote, or become doctors or lawyers unless they gave up their status.
After being passed by the Senate in December, it is now before the House of Commons, having passed its first reading. There is immense pressure from the First Nations to receive Royal Assent before the deadline.
Take a listen to learn about the bill, its history, and how it will impact Alderville and the rest of First Nations.
