Before Canada Day, the Northumberland Coalition for Social Justice sent out a press release calling on residents to alter their plans. Instead of fireworks and celebrations, it suggested people spend time educating themselves about the history of Indigenous people. This was in the shadow of the recent discovery of more than 1,000 unmarked graves on the grounds of residential schools at locations across Canada. In this interview, Kim McArthur-Jackson and Derek Blackadder, the two co-chairs of the coalition, will talk about how the efforts went on Canada Day. On Canada Day, a group of Port Hope residents gathered at the foot of the statue of Lt. Col. Arthur Williams in front of the town hall to hold an event. People were invited to sign letters, donate money and engage in conversations about the residential school system. The organizers wanted to create an opportunity for the community to take action in the face of the tragic revelations of the discovery of more than 1,000 unmarked graves of Indigenous children over the past few weeks. Pandemic created challenges and opportunities over the past year, says hospital board chairperson

For the past year, the pandemic has dominated the efforts of all health services in Northumberland. The hospital is a cornerstone in providing services but also been a leader throughout. Its partnerships with various agencies and institutions through the Ontario Health Team, the health unit, and others are a driving force in the county. Alderville historian offers insight into the discovery of 215 children’s bodies in Kamloops

The recent discovery of the bodies of 215 Indigenous school children on the site of a residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia, impacted the residents of Alderville. A range of emotions was felt throughout the community, from heartache to grief, to anger. A march was quickly organized to bring people together. They walked from the health centre on Highway 45 towards the war monument, near the band council’s office. Flags were lowered across the county and across the country. Continue Reading →

Chambers of commerce in Northumberland launch free rapid screening program to assist all businesses

The Northumberland Central Chamber of Commerce provides rapid COVID 19 screening kits to all businesses in the county. Through a collaboration with Campbellford, Brighton, and Colborne, people can apply to get these kits to test employees, an important step in preventing the spread of the virus at workplaces.
