The temperature dropped to minus 16 degrees this past week. It snowed, and it rained, as well. When sitting at home or in an office, it is easy to forget people are living unsheltered in these conditions. The Coldest Night of the Year is a walk held in Port Hope designed to raise money and remind us what it is like to be homeless, especially in the winter. Strategic plan for local health aims to improve system across the board, says co-chair

In the spring of last year, the Ontario Health Team – Northumberland launched a strategic planning process. This is the group made up of all the healthcare providers from across the county. From hospitals to long-term care, from family physicians to mental health workers, this group is trying to reform the local system. Sleeping cabin proposal before Cobourg council unpacked

In December, the Cobourg council received a delegation from the Northumberland Sleeping Cabin Collective. It presented a proposal to build 12 units and support services on Furnace Street next to the old Memorial Arena. The proposal will cost about a quarter of a million dollars. This includes the cabins’ construction and operating costs for a six-month pilot project. The money will come from fundraising and contributions from the people living in the cabins.
