The Northumberland Humane Society is expanding its location, as it has outgrown its existing facility. The shelter on Theatre Road was constructed in 2003, primarily as a municipal pound. Now, the organization is seeking to construct a 6,200-square-foot humane society, renovate the existing building for a dog training and staff centre, and provide low-cost veterinary care, such as a spay-and-neuter clinic. Wendy Riley, Animal Care Director, and Kim Good, Capital Campaign Director with the Humane Society, told Port Hope Council recently that the organization is at capacity.
The Port Hope Legion and the municipality are working together to create a commemorative veterans walk in honour of the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary this month. Many communities are advocating for the creation of a walkway at or near the local cenotaph or a crosswalk, with a design approved by the Legion. Vincent O’Hanley, a retired Captain and member of the Port Hope Legion, says initial estimates for the project are $12,000-$15,000.
