The 2026 policing priorities for the Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police are set.
With less than one year on the job, detachment commander Inspector Mike Cavanaugh has been meeting with municipal leaders in Northumberland County to discuss their policing needs.
He addressed Brighton Municipal Council Monday night, announcing target enforcement areas. Fighting crime will be a top priority for OPP, with traffic, recreational vehicle and trail use, and community safety and wellbeing high on the list.
A problem for many rural mayors is Highway 401 detours through their towns, which they assert is wreaking havoc on municipal roads.
Cavanaugh told council he will examine detour usage when vehicles crash on the 401.
