Traffic concerns and the Indigenous duty to consult were among the topics raised by residents regarding the New Danforth Subdivision in Alnwick Halidmand Township on July 15.
Politicians and staff listened to residents who participated in a public meeting about the draft subdivision plan located on Old Danforth Road and Purdy Road.
A traffic impact study for a proposed development, which highlighted concerns about increased traffic on Highway 401 and Lyle Street, was discussed.
Suzanne Elston raised issues about the study’s scope, development charges, and infrastructure burdens on existing taxpayers. She also highlighted the recent controversy in Oshawa related to the impact of construction at the former GM headquarters on Alderville First Nation, inquiring whether the developer was undertaking proper consultations and archaeological studies.
Northumberland County Senior Planner Ashley Yearwood clarified that traffic studies typically focus on immediate areas and that recent legislation defers development charges to the time of occupancy. The archeological studies are being reviewed by the Alderville First Nations. The council acknowledged these concerns and promised further information in the future.
Here is the exchange between Suzanne Elston and council:
In Their Words is a feature that allows people to listen to what is going on at the various councils within Northumberland. No spin. No opinions. No one is telling you what to think. Just what was said.
It is a chance you might not have otherwise to hear directly from your elected representatives. I hope you find it useful and informative.
