Cramahe Township residents face a 3.79 percent increase in their taxes this year, Mayor Mandy Martin said on February 13, 2026.
For homeowners with a property valued at $400,000, that means a $177 increase in the municipal portion of their tax bill.
One of the more controversial debates during a special budget meeting earlier this month was the Northumberland Humane Society’s contract for animal shelter services. It sought the township’s $34,000 contribution. The humane society provides services to multiple municipalities in the county, including Cobourg, Port Hope, Hamilton Township, and Alnwick-Haldimand.
After a report from the bylaw enforcement officer and more than an hour of debate, council approved a contribution of around $15,000 and is seeking more detailed information to justify the original request.
Have a listen and see if you agree with this decision, especially if you are an animal lover.
In Their Words is a feature that allows people to listen to what is going on at the various councils within Northumberland. No spin. No opinions. No one is telling you what to think. Just what was said.
It is a chance you might not have otherwise to hear directly from your elected representatives. I hope you find it useful and informative.
