Cobourg council narrowly rejected a proposal to create a waterfront task force to oversee changes to the Waterfront Nature Park on the west beach and headlands at its recent regular council meeting on May 28.
Instead, the divided council decided to accept the staff recommendation for a single task force that would integrate the park into a broader Parks and Recreation Master plan.
Cobourg residents Debbie Black and Richard Pope appeared before council to advocate for the creation of a separate task force to deal specifically with the Waterfront Nature Park. They emphasized the urgency of immediate protection and stewardship for the fragile West Beach and West Headland. They highlighted the need for a separate task force due to the park’s unique nature and its degradation since COVID-19.
The task force was requested in February, but the council asked for a staff report. It was included in the agenda at the May 28 meeting.
In this In Their Words, you will hear the presentations by Black and Pope, and the councillors debate the two options.
In Their Words is a feature that allows people to listen to what is going on at the various councils within Northumberland. No spin. No opinions. No one is telling you what to think. Just what was said.
It is a chance you might not have otherwise to hear directly from your elected representatives. I hope you find it useful and informative.
