A snow removal program for seniors and people with accessibility challenges took a step forward earlier this week, as Cobourg council gave the green light to a pilot program for next winter.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland gave the green light to the idea discussed at the regular council meeting, noting a community need expressed by seniors and people with mobility challenges.
The report will include an analysis of costs and the feasibility analysis of equipment and delivery options. The Accessibility Advisory Committee will also be consulted. There will also be community input.
Councillor Brian Darling expressed concern about the cost and logistics, saying staff should not be allowed to move ahead without returning to politicians for final approval.
The pilot would involve minimal equipment and staff, focusing on a small sample before expanding to the town as a whole.
Oshawa, Ajax, and Clarington are municipalities offering a similar program.
The report is expected to be done by June and presented to the Standing Committee.
