After some political posturing and heated discussion, the Cobourg Police Service will see its 20.5 percent budget increase for next year approved by municipal council.
Councillors met Monday for a marathon debate on Mayor Lucas Cleveland’s proposed budget.
They would need to be creative in how to fund the police, but not to raise taxes too much on the public.
Cleveland wanted to use the police reserves to offset the increase, while Police Board Chair and Councillor Adam Bureau suggested the entire $1.2 million be applied to the tax base.
Yet a compromise would see half split between the reserves and the other half on the budget.
