Council moves towards long-term plan for preserving Victoria Hall

A small step towards a long-term plan to preserve Victoria Hall as a national landmark was unanimously approved Monday night at Cobourg council. An application for up to $10,000 in funding would provide half the funding for a major strategic plan to outline future restoration and preservation. Victoria Hall Volunteers President Claire Lloyd said her organization, which raises money to assist with maintaining the building, said this is delightful news. “We think it is imperative,” she said. “Working as volunteers with a mandate to preserve the historical aspects of Victoria Hall, this strategic plan will ensure the hall remains a beautiful landmark that it is.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Town undergoing $50,000 organizational review to steamline operation

The town will spend about $50,000 to review its organization and salaries with an eye to improving services and becoming more efficient, says Interim Chief Administration Officer Glenn McGlashon. Rather than do the review internally, the town hired Toronto-based OCG Strategy and Organization Consulting to look at all the set up and functions of all municipal departments with an eye to improving service delivery. 2011 derailment shone light on areas needing improvement: NORTHUMBERLAND – In the face of the recent Lac-Megantic train derailment in Quebec, officials in Northumberland County say they are prepared to handle rail disasters and emergency evacuations if necessary. Animal Control responsible for more than cats and dogs, Council hears: COBOURG – A dying squirrel and an injured duck created a tempest over the jurisdiction of the Animal Control officer at Cobourg Council Monday night. Mutton sends letter to council: While a Cobourg councillor is trying to get answers about the future of her boulevard garden, the Town cut her plants Tuesday morning. A letter from Councillor Miriam Mutton regarding the boulevard garden in front of her George Street home created a minor stir Monday night at the regular Council meeting. Council destroying harboour’s west headland – naturalists: COBOURG – A group of angry naturalists chastised town Council for destroying the west headland of Cobourg harbour in a letter to Council Monday night, but the director of public works said there is no reason for concern. Big Band music comes to nearby Trenton

A very good friend of mine leads an amazing Swing Band, similar to those from the Big Band Era, called the Commodores. The full-sized, 17-piece band  plays the classics, as performed by the likes of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Harry James, and many more. So, this is a shameless plug for him and his band. My friend, Andy Sparling, will co-hosts Glen Woodcock’s Canada Day Weekend  Big Band Show on Toronto’s JAZZ-FM 91

CBC Hyperlocal project an exciting first for Canada

One of the most ambitious and exciting hyperlocal projects in Canada right now is the CBC project “Hyperlocal”. This five-week project is a call to Canadians to tell stories about the neighbourhoods. “We want to know what’s new and changing in your neighbourhood and what that change means to you,” the website says. It is collecting text, photos, audio or raw video. All stories will be posted online and one will be selected by a jury panel at the end. Continue Reading →
