Brighton Mayor Brian Ostrander is not happy the provincial government intends to eliminate speed cameras.
Brighton recently installed a camera in a community safety zone, which includes local schools.
The Doug Ford government said it will table legislation to halt speed cameras, as Ford has called them a cash grab, making life more expensive. The government is proposing to create a fund for municipalities to install traffic calming measures aimed at reducing speed.
Ostrander says while he has heard complaints from speeders, in general, the cameras are changing driving habits, making the area safer for pedestrians.
He contends the money from the camera program will reduce taxes for ratepayers.
