Alderville First Nations Chief Taynar Simpson advanced the cause of personhood for Rice Lake and the Ganaraska River to the United Nations on Earth Day as part of the first High-Level meeting on Harmony with Nature and Living Well conference held in New York City. Simpson was one of many Indigenous groups worldwide expressing their concerns and solutions for protecting the environment at the meeting.
The chief also attended the Indigenous Ambassador Program at the Canadian Nuclear Association’s 2025 conference in April, where he and other Indigenous leaders met with nuclear industry representatives to discuss the Pickering refurbishment, the New Nuclear Project at Darlington, and the Wesleyville project. He discussed the potential equity ownership of these projects with Indigenous people.
Finally, Simpson talks briefly about the recent Landfest, a community gathering at the Haliburton property.
