The number of people joining unions is on the rise during the pandemic as workers rethink jobs

Drive along any street in town, and you will see laws signs or maybe a billboard where a local business is looking to hire. The Canadian economy added 94,000 jobs in July, bringing employment to within 250,000 of pre-pandemic levels. But the numbers also show weaker-than-expected hiring, especially in restaurants and hotels. Employers are struggling to find staff. Not since 2018 have businesses struggled this hard to find skilled or semi-skilled labour, according to a Canadian Federation of Independent Business survey done in July. Continue Reading →

Anyone who has tried to organize a large group will tell you how hard it can be, especially getting everyone on the same page and coordinating people’s efforts to ensure things work. Now, imagine taking hundreds of community volunteers, an entire Rotary Club, a group of nurses, and up to nearly 1,000 people per day to be vaccinated. The logistics are mindboggling. My guest is one of many people who contributed to the imitative to create a mass clinic at the Cobourg Community Centre. The list of people deserving credit is too long to rhyme off here. School kids face possible impacts if those eligible do not get doses, says chief medical officer

Northumberland residents are being urged to get vaccinated before the fall to protect school children heading back to the classroom. Dr. Natalie Bocking, chief medical officer for the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, says the more adults who are fully vaccinated, the safer children will be. Currently, children under 12 are not able to get a vaccination. As Bocking explains, it is up to all eligible people to help keep them safe. “I guess part of that is when we think about schools, and we think about schools needing to reopen COVID virus infections in schools really a reflection of the amount of COVID infections happening at a community level,” Bocking said. Vaccine appointments cancelled as residents being asked to rebook sooner to stem fall surge

Don’t be surprised to get a notice your upcoming vaccination appointment is cancelled. It’s not that the health unit doesn’t want you to get the shot. In fact, it wants you to get it sooner. Dr. Natalie Bocking, chief medical officer for the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, says about 8,000 people with second dose appointments are scheduled for later in August, September, October, and November. Northumberland County behind on vaccinations, says chief medical officer

The need for Northumberland County residents to get vaccinated is more urgent now than ever, according to Dr. Natalie Bocking, the chief medical officer for the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit. On Tuesday, Dr. Bocking emphasized the importance of getting 90 percent or more of the people eligible for vaccines inoculated before the fall or face serious consequences. Northumberland County is behind the rest of the regions making up the health unit’s coverage area. It is also behind the provincial average. Port Hope house tour gets a makeover due to pandemic with a virtual event and walking tours
