According to the government of Canada’s website, this represents an opportunity to engage in dialogue and commitment to learning more about the stories of Black communities in Canada – the histories, successes, sacrifices, and triumphs. As you will hear in this interview, Northumberland Hills Hospital also borrowed a bit from the American Black History Month, also taking place this February. The theme in the United States is Black resistance. Old transit bus becomes new warming centre for Port Hope

Jordan Stevenson is a local Port Hope businessman. He is also an advocate for the homeless and affordable housing. An old city transit bus from Windsor arrived at his office on Hamilton Road. Alderville chief angry over lack of consultation regarding proposed Brighton development

Last week, I brought you the story of a proposal to develop a 32-unit condominium in Brighton that has many residents worried. It also has the mayor and councillors concerned. The developer, JRB Williams Enterprises, wants to build on lands next to a provincially protected wetland on an area zoned for residential. An archeological assessment report submitted to the council says some Indigenous pottery was found dating back to 600 AD. Alderville Chief Dave Mowat is pretty upset. Continue Reading →

Proposed Gosport development impacted in part by new provincial planning rules, says mayor

While Brighton council must address concerns raised by residents, it also faces new pressures from the Ontario government. New policies governing the planning process were implemented late last year. These include cutting development costs, streamlining approvals, and speeding up the building of affordable housing. Mayor Brian Ostrander will talk about his reaction to the residents and their presentation at a public meeting on January 16. When sitting at home or in an office, it is easy to forget people are living unsheltered in these conditions. The Coldest Night of the Year is a walk held in Port Hope designed to raise money and remind us what it is like to be homeless, especially in the winter. Strategic plan for local health aims to improve system across the board, says co-chair

In the spring of last year, the Ontario Health Team – Northumberland launched a strategic planning process. This is the group made up of all the healthcare providers from across the county. From hospitals to long-term care, from family physicians to mental health workers, this group is trying to reform the local system. Sleeping cabin proposal before Cobourg council unpacked

In December, the Cobourg council received a delegation from the Northumberland Sleeping Cabin Collective. It presented a proposal to build 12 units and support services on Furnace Street next to the old Memorial Arena. The proposal will cost about a quarter of a million dollars. This includes the cabins’ construction and operating costs for a six-month pilot project. The money will come from fundraising and contributions from the people living in the cabins.
