The Mobile Community Food Market, in rural municipalities in Northumberland County, is gaining traction. After opening a twice-monthly market in Grafton, the Community Health Centres of Northumberland expanded to neighbouring Colborne earlier this year. The market offers locally or provincially grown produce, raised meats and prepared foods such as homemade soups and meat pies at a discounted price. Shoppers can also buy only what they need to avoid the extra costs of buying in bulk.
Joelle Pegg, the Food Market Coordinator, says approximately 12 people are becoming regulars at the Colborne market. She says the downtown location is great, but reaching more residents may require operating in the evening or on weekends.
The show includes an interview with Alderville Chief Taynar Simpson talking about wildfires and a new tresspass bylaw introduced by the band council.
Northumberland @5 is a local news segment and podcast hosted by local journalism initiative reporter Dan Jones. It covers hyper-local municipal updates, community stories, and historical events from Northumberland County, Ontario
