Efforts by Port Hope Councillor Claire Holloway Wadhwani to introduce a long-term approach to making the town’s assets more environmentally sustainable failed to move her fellow politicians at a recent meeting.
During a detailed presentation of the town’s Strategic Asset Management policy at its June 2 meeting, Holloway Wadhwani argued the town should review the report with attention given to adopting climate-adaptive assets. This would refer to infrastructure modified or preserved to withstand extreme weather and changing climate conditions. It is designed to reduce flood risks, manage stormwater, and improve community resilience against environmental changes.
While these are mentioned in the report, she wanted the language strengthened to ensure their implementation.
A motion to send the document back to the Environmental Advisory Committee for further review was defeated. The original motion to recommend the adoption of the policy was passed unanimously. It will go on to full council for final approval.
