
The Ontario government is proposing to consolidate 36 conservation authorities into seven. A new central agency will provide oversight, strategic direction, and a single point of contact. As is often the case, the government argues it will save costs and create efficiency.
But what will this mean for the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority?
Formed in 1946, it is one of the oldest authorities. Its two major jobs are to protect the region’s source waters and to provide flood control. This ensures the integrity of healthy water for many rural residents and prevents erosion and devastation along waterways.
In this interview, Port Hope Deputy Mayor Vicki Mink, chair of the GRCA, will discuss potential changes and what they mean for the western half of Northumberland County.
