In 1996, 26 workers in the Westray mine in Plymouth, Nova Scotia, lost their lives. In 2004, after a lengthy battle, unions successfully lobbied the federal government to make corporations criminally liable for workplace deaths and injuries. This victory will be commemorated at the Day of Mourning event at Lucas Point Park in Cobourg this Sunday. While people still die on the job and more people are injured, it is not all bad news. County sells recycling plant to Emterra Environmental as producers take over recycling

Northumberland County Council recently inked a deal to sell the Materials Recovery Facility or MRF, as it is also known, for an undisclosed amount. A major corporation, Emterra Environmental, is hoping to buy it. Emterra runs recycling operations across Canada and the United States. Strategic plan for local health aims to improve system across the board, says co-chair

In the spring of last year, the Ontario Health Team – Northumberland launched a strategic planning process. This is the group made up of all the healthcare providers from across the county. From hospitals to long-term care, from family physicians to mental health workers, this group is trying to reform the local system. Fifty-two women in Ontario were killed by a spouse or partner over the last year. On average, that is one woman per week. It is a shocking statistic. The danger to women in abusive situations has grown since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.
