
If you are a resident of Alnwick-Haldimand Township, your taxes will be going up about four percent. At least that was approved by politicians at a special budget meeting earlier this week.
It could change. Several reports are still being prepared and will be submitted to the council. That means politicians could reopen the budget for amendments. For now, the rate is set. It is two percent for the operating and capital budgets. Plus, there is the two percent dedicated infrastructure levy.
For one township resident, this is a disappointment. Kristine Williams Kalledat has led a campaign to ignite interest in the 2026 budget. She wrote a letter to council on January 7 raising multiple questions and concerns. She never got any answers from staff or politicians. It was never included in a meeting agenda.
In this interview, she says the outcome of the budget deliberations will not affect her efforts to hold council and staff accountable.
