Port Hope Police are seeking a hefty increase to its 2026 budget, which has left one municipal councillor in shock at the dollar figure.
In 2025, the budget was approximately $7.1 million. Yet, the proposed budget presented by the Police Services Board is requesting a $1 million increase.
A bulk of the increase will go to fund salaries and benefits for staff. Rural policing by the Ontario Provincial Police will also increase for the second consecutive year.
Capital expenditures will see the purchase of in-car cameras and a new cruiser.
A little put off by the increase, councillors are asking the Police Board to revise the proposed budget to find potential savings.
