Port Hope council heard from Watson and Associates, which presented an interim report on the 2025 Ward boundary review and council composition on Dec. 2.
The existing Ward system was evaluated, revealing population disparities: Ward 1 is 15% above the average, and Ward 2 is 69% below. The system partially succeeds in urban-rural divisions but fails to differentiate communities.
The roles of the Deputy Mayor and the size of the council were discussed, with options including electing the Deputy Mayor at large or selecting from among councilors.
Various Ward configurations were proposed, considering urban-rural divisions and population parity, to inform future council decisions.
The first phase of community engagement is complete, and the municipality has shared the “what we heard” report findings. Further opportunities for public input on recommended options are planned.

In Their Words is a feature that allows people to listen to what is going on at the various councils within Northumberland. No spin. No opinions. No one is telling you what to think. Just what was said.
It is a chance you might not have otherwise to hear directly from your elected representatives. I hope you find it useful and informative.
