
As the opioid and fentanyl crisis continues to grip Indigenous communities, the Alderville First Nation is being proactive on how leadership can tackle the issue.
At the recent Assembly of First Nations, Chiefs passed a resolution calling for more provincial and federal support over drug use by declaring a state of emergency.
Chief Taynar Simpson says the Alderville First Nation has its own trespassing laws, which he admits are challenging to enforce, claiming the Ontario Provincial Police will not recognize, but that Alderville is not allowed to develop an on-reserve police force.
Yet despite this, Chief Simpson says his First Nation has a proposal to the federal government to create an Indigenous addictions and treatment facility.
