Remembering a great shave in Movember
|
By Robert Washburn
Okay, now that week three is behind me, I am now anxious to begin growing my beard back. The initial shock of losing my facial hair is long gone. As the picture for this week shows, the moustache is coming back in nicely. But, it is the chin. That naked chin is driving me nuts. Continue Reading →

The golden age of moustaches
|
By Robert Washburn
The 19th century was the golden age of moustaches. Throughout history men have grown hair above their upper lip. But, beginning in about the 1850s a wide variety of moustaches became popular across Europe and North America. In England, military men returning from the Crimean War made moustaches popular. Many of the men let their facial hair grow on the battlefield. Continue Reading →

The tough part of Movember’s journey
|
By Robert Washburn
The worst part of any journey is the middle. It is the time when the original enthusiasm associated with the outset of an adventure is gone and the relief of finally arriving is not there. Yup, it is the drudgery, the boring part where the expectations are meeting reality. With week three of Movember under the belt, the outline of the moustache is easily seen from a distance, not just up close. There is enough length to feel a bit prickly. Continue Reading →

Prostate cancer is not just an old man’s disease

The moustaches grown by the Loyalist Mo-crew, meaning all the male journalism students is coming along very nicely. There are a few struggling to muster some facial hair, but it is really cool to see their attitude. Despite the lack of growth, they are happy to be part of the Movember movement. A Movember moustache without a name
|
By Robert Washburn
One of my students was doing a video for a Movember story. He was asking a set of questions to each of the members of the Loyalist Mo-crew, the team of journalism students raising money for prostate cancer research. After a few standard questions, like “Why are you doing this?”, he quickly asked me if my moustache had a pet name. Huh? (more…) Continue Reading →

Asking for your donation for Movember
|
By Robert Washburn
With just over two weeks left in Movember, it is time to get serious about raising money. So, I am asking all my friends and family to please donate to help fight prostate cancer. It does not need to be a lot: $5, $10, $15, $25 or more, if you can afford it. It does not matter. Any amount helps. Continue Reading →

Learning a lot in Movember
|
By Robert Washburn
A colleague shared the spirit of Movember with me on the way out the door Friday. It seems her husband had a beautiful moustache when he was younger, but it did not suit him as he grew older. So, off it came. Now, for Movember, he is growing it back, much to her chagrin. Like the rest of us, it tends to be a bit pokey (her term) in the early stages. Continue Reading →

Ego, not genes, affects moustache growth in Movember
|
By Robert Washburn
Growing a moustache is not as easy as it looks. Sure, it seems simple. Don’t shave. Hair grows. Voilà. Continue Reading →

V is also for Movember
|
By Robert Washburn
The minimal outline of a moustache is forming. The area under my nose is not so barren, but it is far from proper facial hair. Looking at the various high-profile moustaches, it was interesting to see the Guy Fawkes masks, used in the 2006 movie V for Vendetta, appearing at the Occupy protest events. The mask appears internationally as a common sign for revolution. The creator, artist David Lloyd, is quoted as saying he is pleased the mask is being used as a symbol of protest against tyranny.
