Several major initiatives were advanced during a recent meeting of the Union of Ontario Indians in Thunder Bay, including the reintroduction of the First Nations Clean Water Act.
Alderville First Nation Chief Taynar Simpson shares details of efforts to bring the legislation back to the federal government for passage in the fall.
The Chief also addressed amendments to the Indian Act under Bill S-2, regarding the second-generation cutoff rule and its impact on Indigenous identity and status.
He discussed the upcoming First Ministers meeting in November, where First Nations will be sitting at the table during a meeting of provincial premiers.
Simpson also spoke about meeting with Ontario Minister Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development and Indigenous Affairs, regarding the Rice Lake Legal Personhood Initiative and the enforcement of commercial fishing regulations.
He discussed the recent exchange between Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew regarding the duty to consult with First Nations on border changes related to Alberta Separatism. The Chief believed this public exchange might increase government accountability and carefulness when discussing First Nations issues, as it brought national attention to misrepresentations of the law.
In honour of National Indigenous History Month, highlighting historical achievements including Olympic marathon runners Albert Smoke and Fred Simpson, and Alderville’s high per capita enlistment in World War I despite not being legally obligated to participate.
Finally, the Chief shared upcoming community events, including a powwow on July 11-12 and various cultural celebrations throughout June.
