Annual Jim Bradford Classic kicks off Friday

COBOURG — For the first time in the two decades of the fastball tournament, Legion Fields in Cobourg will play host to the Jim Bradford Classic. The 21st edition of the Classic runs Friday to Sunday. For the first 16 years, the tournament was held in Baltimore before moving to Grafton for the past four years. The existing tournament was renamed in memory of Jim Bradford following his death in 2001. Bradford, who was from Baltimore, was the only nationally recognized Level 5 umpire in both fast-pitch and slo-pitch. Continue Reading →

Detailed report helps volleyball tournament go ahead

A few changes made the difference as the Ontario Beach Volleyball tournaments won approval at Cobourg council Monday night to hold its events this summer at Cobourg beach. The tournaments, which run on the weekends of June 18, June 25 and July 16, were held up last week when Councillor Donna Todd was unhappy with the details provided in a report by tourism events coordinator Lara Scott. Council delays approval for annual beach volleyball tournament

A delay in approving an annual provincial volleyball tournament in June for Cobourg beach will not affect the event, says the vice-president of the Ontario Volleyball Association Thursday. Gord Ley, who represents the organization holding the Ontario Volleyball Association Beach Volleyball Tournaments on the weekends of June 18, June 25 and July 16, said he is not worried about council’s decision to table the approval of this year’s events. The same tournaments took place over the last three years. “No, I don’t think so,” he said. Ley is a founding member of the Northumberland Breakers Volleyball Club, which has more than 200 athletes, where he has served as beach director, coach and assistant coach. Continue Reading →

New curling club negotiating to use Jack Heenan Arena

From the ashes of uncertainty, a new curling club will rise up to occupy the old Jack Heenan Arena, according to town officials this week. The final touches are being put on a contract between the town and the newly formed West Northumberland Curling Club to use the Jack Heenan Arena on Furnace Street based on a full cost recovery basis, meaning residents will not pay anything for the nearly 30-year old facility, said Chief Administrative Officer Stephen Peacock Tuesday. Mayor Gil Brocanier said is enthusiastic about the deal, which is estimated to save the town more than $300,000 a year. “It is a good thing because it will save the taxpayers money,’ he said.
